Change of telecommunications regulatory body in Mozambique

Mozambique, located in southern Africa, has announced a change in its telecommunications regulatory body. In the future, the ARECOM authority will be responsible for the type approval or operating licence of telecommunications equipment. ARECOM stands for “Autoridade Reguladora das Comunicações de Moçambique” and is similar in scope to the American FCC or the German Federal Network Agency. It is assumed that the change of authority will not affect the requirements of the type approval or the application procedure.

Africa and also Mozambique have a very high demand for radio and telecommunications products due to their geographical size with telecommunications infrastructure that is not always available or well developed. Mozambique’s balance of trade is still very negative, and it is one of the poorest countries with few manufacturing industries. The most important export commodity is aluminum, and imports include machinery and electronic equipment. The most important trading partner at present is China. Certification is required for many electronic devices. The most important of these is the Radio Type Approval.

For every single device that is to be imported to Africa and brought into the trade there, a type approval of the respective local authority is required. In contrast to harmonized economic areas such as the EU, it should be noted that each African state operates its own authority and therefore cross-border or even continental approvals do not exist, but must be applied for individually for each country. With an appropriate certification, the importer or manufacturer can prove that his product meets all quality requirements and avoid problems with loss of time or additional costs during import. Since 2005 MPR International GmbH – Africa Certification has been supporting companies worldwide with the certification of products for the markets of Africa, China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and India. We would be pleased to advise you without obligation on the procedure and costs of an Africa certification for the market in Mozambique and other African countries.
